UK SAILING HOLIDAYS IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND
Sailing holidays in the Solent are extremely good value for money as there are no flights to fund or currency exchange charges. You get an extra two days sailing holiday rather than travel stress. The weather was very warm in 2009 with lovely sunny conditions early in the year and well into October before the drying conditions ended. There was very little rain, a handful of showers, and the hose pipe ban was brought in early as proof. Summer temperatures outside of the heat waves were well up in the 20s in the summer months. Winds in the Solent are ideal for sailing which may be why it is the home of yachting. Speaking of Cowes, the annual regatta suffered from calm conditions early in the event. Generally winds ranged force 3 to 5, rather less than the previous year when force 6 was common, and it was not until early November that we had a serious gale.
The great thing about Solent sailing is the variety which you do not get from an exposed coastline. The presence of the Isle of Wight adds many convenient anchorages, bays, beaches, creeks, harbours and rivers within easy reach of the mainland marinas. For the more adventurous, a sail around the island via the famous Needles rocks provides the reward of breath taking marine scenery and you may see a whale or dolphin. The beautiful blue flag beaches at Studland are 3 hours sailing from fashionable Lymington. Poole harbour, the world's second largest natural harbour with Brownsea Island home of the boy scouts and red squirrels as its center piece is 4 hours away. Weymouth, the venue for the Olympic sailing in 2012 is 8 hours sailing and Cherbourg is 12 hours due south.
In addition to the scenery and the sailing, there can be few places steeped in such naval history as the Solent. Apart from the fleet assembled in Portsmouth harbour (3 hours sailing from Lymington) the Beaulieu river gives access to Bucklers Hard where three of Nelsons warships in action at the battle of Trafalgar were built. The worlds largest cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2 are frequently sighted rounding the sand bank off Calshot Spit as are the super tankers offloading at Fawley and the floating giants heading for Southamptons container port.
On the wining and dining side, apart from the al fresco possibilities using the cockpit table or main saloon dining table, most marinas have their own on site restaurants. A short stroll into the harbour area reveals a wealth of choice of waterside bars and bistros. We will advise you of the ones to head for.So why would anyone want to sail anywhere else?
Prices for holidays follow the pricing given in the Bareboat and Skippered sections.
LATEST SAFETY EQUIPMENT INSTALLED ON OUR BAVARIA 38
15th March 2005 Yachts are being continuously upgraded. The Bavaria 38 'Dotty Dot'is now equipped with colour Raymarine C Series Chartplotter and Radar. This equipment is simple to operate and will allow greater safety for Channel crossings. The Marpa technology allows the tracking of ships which may be on a reciprocal heading and early action to be taken. Also invaluable in Solent fog which can roll in during many months of the year.
June 2004 Hurst Point Yacht Charters in The Round The Island Race. We were pleased with our result in the Round The Island Race. Look at the pictures below. Although we did not have the best conditions with gusty winds and choppy seas we had an official time of 8 Hours 24 Minutes and a great time was had by all. See photos below.
